Based in Wichita, KS, rapper XV – Donavan LaMond Johnson – has a career spanning nearly 20 years with the credentials to back it. Having worked with names such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Pusha-T, Big Sean, Schoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs among many other notable artists, XV has built a discography that turns heads.

XV sets the tone for this upcoming chapter with his newest single “Caron Butler,” accompanied by an old school music video. The track tells the story of the underdog, the person who has always been in the game alongside the bigger names in the industry, paralleling XV’s experience in rap and Caron Butler’s in basketball.

“Hip-Hop and Sports have always shared certain similarities and comparisons, and even though Caron Butler isn't your typical NBA superstar name to compare yourself to, I wanted to let people know who I feel like I am in this game,” XV shares on the inspiration behind the track. “It was an intriguing concept for me because Caron Butler is from a small town in the Midwest and even turned his life around to pursue his dream at the age of 15, like myself. I just felt a connection to him, from his aggression and passion for the game, to his story that many casual basketball fans might not know. My hope is to make people look up his story after being inspired by this underdog record.”

Producer MIKE SUMMERS has been in XV’s corner since the very beginning, helping kickstart his career on his early tracks and mixtapes, working closely with SUMMERS on his first project in 2005. With a loyal fan base and strong roots in the music industry, XV has what it takes to catapult his career to the next level. He kick started his career as a teenager, making the decision to get into rapping as a means to keep him focused and has since used his music to give a glimpse into his journey through the past couple decades in XV’s life as a rapper, father, and individual.

Having previously had a record deal with Warner Records for a few years after the success of his single “Awesome (feat. Pusha-T),” which was featured in the NBA 2K video game and a Verizon commercial, XV is now taking his career into his own hands, releasing independently alongside MIKE SUMMERS.
